Respect Everett Historical Commission’s vote to save house

On Oct. 2 the Everett Historical Commission voted 8-0 to deny the demolition of an historic home at 2115 Grand Ave.. On Oct. 31, city Planning Director Yorik Stevens-Wajda, overruled the Historical Commission and approved the demolition of the historic home to make room for a new multi-family unit. Previously the Historical Commission had voted 7-0-1 to disallow the design of the new structure due to the number of deviations from the established guidelines the developer had in the design. Even after months of review by the Historical Commission the developer, Capricorn Investments, refused to comply with all the regulations for homes within the historical district.
I am not opposed to new housing in our area, I recognized that Everett has a severe shortage of affordable housing. I am opposed to demolishing historic homes in order to build million dollar condos. The decision by the city planning director sets a dangerous precedent for all homes within the historical district.
