Thank you so much for publishing Eric Stevick’s June 28 profile of Naji Ali, recent graduate of Edmonds Community College and immigrant from Syria. I felt much compassion as I read of Mr. Ali’s struggles to learn English, find a job, help support his family, earn his degree and continue his studies while earning a living. We might all take a lesson from his example of determination and optimism. We hear far too much about “dangerous” people coming to our country and far too little about the truth. Those who come here are seeking a better life for themselves and their families.
As I volunteered in my granddaughter’s public school classroom in south Everett this year, I met children from Russia, Ukraine, Iraq, Syria, Mexico, all eager to learn and thrive here. Their parents came to school functions and volunteered on field trips. They are contributing to the fabric of our society.
We should all welcome and assist newcomers and I am grateful to know Mr. Ali, and others from faraway lands, have joined our community. I wish for all safe passage and continued success.
