VANCOUVER, B.C. — The Everett AquaSox knocked off the Vancouver Canadians 6-4 Wednesday at Nat Bailey Stadium to win their first series of the year and finish their season-opening road trip with a 3-3 record.
The AquaSox play host to the Boise Hawks in a five-game series beginning tonight at Everett Memorial Stadium. Vancouver slipped to 3-3 on the season.
Wednesday’s seesaw battle featured four lead changes. The AquaSox took the lead for good with three runs in the top of the fifth. Gus Craig tied the game with a sacrifice fly for his third RBI, and Nick Zammarelli’s RBI bloop single plated Kyle Lewis and Kristian Brito for a 6-4 advantage the Frogs did not relinquish.
Lane Ratliff earned the win with 12/3 innings of scoreless relief and Marvin Gorgas recorded the final five outs for his first save of the season for Everett. All told AquaSox pitchers combined for 51/3 scoreless innings to take Wednesday’s rubber match from Vancouver.
Everett leadoff hitter Bryson Brigman finished with three hits and two runs while Zamamrelli was 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Lewis also finished with two runs scored.
Vancouver starter Justin Maese was hard-luck loser. He scattered eight hits in six innings and allowed all six runs — just two of which were earned. Three Canadians relievers combined for three scoreless innings of their own.
Brigman led off the top of the first inning with a single. He advanced to third on an error and scored on Craig’s one-out sacrifice fly. The Canadians immediately answered in the bottom of first as Jacob Anderson’s two-out double scored Yeltsin Gudino and J.B. Woodman to take a 2-1 lead.
Zammarelli led off with a double and scored on Yojhan Quevedo’s RBI groundout to tie the game in the top of the second, and Craig added an RBI double to score Lewis for a 3-2 advantage in the top of the third.
An error and back-to-back RBI singles from Gudino and Woodman gave Vancouver a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the fourth and chase Everett starter Jake Brentz.
But the AquaSox answered yet again as they took the lead for good.
Everett reliever Michael Koval worked out of a bases-loaded one-out jam in the bottom of the sixth by inducing a forceout at home and a strikeout to preserve the lead. Gorgas retired all five hitters he faced and has not allowed a baserunner yet this season.
