The Everett AquaSox split their away series against the Eugene Emeralds this past week, losing the first three games before closing out on a three-game win streak. The AquaSox are 11-16 and sit last in the Northwest League.
Eugene 3, Everett 2
After he was assigned to Everett that afternoon, Jonny Farmelo (1-for-4, HR, 2 RBI) wasted little time making an impact for the AquaSox on April 29. The 29th overall pick in the 2023 MLB Draft, Farmelo gave Everett a 2-0 lead at the top of the fifth inning with a two-run home run.
After Quinn McDaniel cut it to 2-1 with a solo shot in the seventh, the Emeralds walked it off with a pair of RBI singles from Thomas Gavello, then Bo Davidson. Everett’s Gabriel Sosa earned the loss with the blown save, while starting pitcher Nick Payero allowed six hits and struck out four in six shutout innings.
Eugene 7, Everett 0
A total of five Eugene pitchers held Everett to just five hits in the shutout win. AquaSox starter Marcelo Perez (3 H, 4 K, 0 BB) allowed no runs through 3.2 innings, but the bullpen fell apart in the fifth inning.
Jurrangelo Cijntje (0.1 IP, 2 H, 4 ER, 0 K, 3 BB) allowed a solo home run to Scott Bandura, then allowed two runs to cross by walking Jonah Cox, then hitting Charlie Szykowny with a pitch with the bases loaded. Shaddon Peavyhouse (1.2 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K) threw a wild pitch with the bases loaded to go down 4-0.
The Emeralds tacked on three more runs with a two-run homer and a sacrifice fly.
Eugene 6, Everett 5
The game remained scoreless through five innings, but Eugene scored three in the bottom of the six, including two via a wild pitch from Nico Tellache (2.2 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 3 K), then Ben Hernandez (1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 0 K).
Everett finally broke out in the top of the eighth, swinging a 4-3 lead with RBI singles from Luis Suisbel (3-for-4, 1 R, 1 RBI) and Tai Peete (2-for-4, 1 RBI), plus a sacrifice fly from Brandon Eike (0-for-3, 1 RBI).
The lead was short-lived, as Eugene scored three in the bottom of the frame to go ahead 6-4, and a home run by Carson Jones (1-for-4, 1 R, 1 RBI) in the top of the ninth was not enough for a comeback.
Everett 7, Eugene 3
The AquaSox got back into the win column on May 2, with starter Ryan Hawks (5.0 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K) improving to 3-2 on the season.
The Emeralds scored a run in the bottom of the first, but back-to-back home runs from Lazaro Montes (2-for-4, 1 R, 1 RBI) and Freuddy Batista (2-for-4, 2 R, 1 RBI) in the top of the second put Everett in front. Farmelo (1-for-5, 1 R, 1 RBI) joined the home run party in the third inning to make it 3-1, and Colt Emerson (2-for-4, 2 R, 1 RBI) belted his first homer of the season in the top of the seventh.
Everett 10, Eugene 2
It was a monster day for Montes (3-for-4, 4 R, 3 RBI), who smashed his team-leading seventh home run of the season in the top of the eighth inning. The 20-year-old Cuba native hit a three-run shot to close out the 10-2 win.
Milkar Perez (1-for-4, 2 RBI) brought Montes across the plate twice, on single in the fourth inning and a sacrifice fly in the seventh, as part of the winning effort, and Cijntje (5.0 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K) rebounded to earn the first professional win of his career.
Everett 10, Eugene 8
The AquaSox hit double-digits once again in a slugging explosion to close out the week. Their first eight runs were scored via home runs.
Michael Arroyo (2-for-5, 2 R, 3 RBI) hit a solo shot in the top of the first inning to start things off, then homered again in the third to score himself and Emerson (2-for-5, 2 R, 3 RBI). Emerson extended Everett’s lead to 6-1 with a three-run homer in the fifth inning, and Peete (2-for-4, 1 R, 2 RBI) hit a two-run shot in the sixth.
Starter Evan Truitt (5.0 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 3 K) earned his first win of the season, improving to 1-2.
Hitter of the Week: Lazaro Montes. The 20-year-old outfielder led the team in OPS (1.262) and walks (5), and he shared the lead in home runs (2), hits (8) and triples (1) while ranking second in batting average (.381) and RBI (4). Montes has been red-hot to start the season, and last week against Eugene was no different.
Pitcher of the Week: Charlie Beilenson. The 25-year-old right-hander struck out seven batters across just three innings in a relief appearance during Everett’s 7-3 win on May 2. Beilenson allowed only one hit and no runs, lowering his season ERA (4.30) by 1.10 runs and batting average against (.226) by 30 points.
The week ahead:
The AquaSox host the Tri-City Dust Devils every day from Tuesday to Sunday. Tri-City is coming off a home series against Spokane, which they split 3-3. The Dust Devils are 14-13 on the season, tied for second in the league with Eugene. The AquaSox went 2-4 against Tri-City in a road series on April 15-20.
