The mothers of youth football players in Arlington and Lakewood are gearing up for an unusual gridiron clash this weekend.
The inaugural Arlington vs. Lakewood Powder Puff Football Game is 5 p.m. Sunday at Haller Stadium (600 E. First St.) in Arlington. The moms of players who are ages 6-14 are playing to raise money for the Arlington Youth Football Association and the Lakewood Youth Football Athletic Association.
For anyone who attends the game, the suggested donation is $5 per individual or $10 per family.
Youth football fees, which cost $200 per season in each youth association, are becoming more difficult for families to pay in these tough economic times. The Arlington and Lakewood associations will use proceeds from the powder puff game to give scholarships that cover the registration fee to players who are in need. The number of players in need increased significantly this year in both communities.
About 20 moms are expected to play for each team in the powder puff. It will be an 11-on-11 contest with four 10-minute quarters. The moms will wear full pads and helmets but instead of tackle football it will be “touch” football; the play ends when a defender touches the offensive player who has the ball.
