MARYSVILLE — Edmonds-Woodway avenged a first-round loss to Marysville-Pilchuck, and did so emphatically with a 64-30 victory in the third-place game at the Class 4A District 1 tournament on Saturday night at the M-P gym.
The Warriors scored the game’s first seven points and never trailed. They built a double-digit margin early in the second period and continued to pull away the rest of the game.
The Tomahawks had surprised Edmonds-Woodway on the Warriors’ home court, 44-43, on Feb. 9 in the district opener.
Warriors coach Duane Hodges agreed the earlier defeat was a wakeup call for his team.
“Absolutely,” he said. “We all had to work harder and practice harder.”
That loss, he said, “wasn’t a matter of skill. It was a matter of heart.” This time, he added, “we were more patient on offense. We looked inside more.”
Senior forward Angela Woods led the Warriors with 22 points, including three 3-pointers. Senior guard Amia Nash added 12 points.
Senior guard Dacia Heckendorf was high for the Tomahawks with nine points.
Edmonds-Woodway, which raised its record to 21-4, advances to play at Eastlake on Tuesday night in another loser-out game. Marysville-Pilchuck ended its season at 15-9.
