Everett has scored its next indoor football franchise.
The Arena Football League is returning to action in 2024, and Everett is among the 16 cities to be awarded a franchise, the league announced Tuesday through its Twitter account.
Team mascots, jersey designs and schedules are set to be released at an unspecified later date.
The new franchise will be the third indoor football team to call Everett home, joining the Everett Hawks (2005-07) and the Everett Raptors (2012).
Other cities receiving a franchise are Austin, Texas; Boise, Idaho; Bakersfield, California; Chicago; Cincinnati; Denver; Lake Charles, Louisiana; Nashville, Tennessee; Odessa, Texas; Orlando, Florida; Philadelphia; Salem, Oregon; St. Paul, Minnesota; San Antonio; and Tallahassee, Florida.
The Arena Football League began play in 1987 and ran for 22 seasons through 2008 before going bankrupt. The league was resurrected in 2010 and again shutdown due to bankruptcy in 2019. There were just six teams in the league at the time of its most recent shuttering.
Indoor football is 8-on-8 and played on a field that’s 50 yards long, 85 feet wide and features 8-yard end zones.
