We’re one step closer to the start of fall sports.

Football practices begin Wednesday. Some teams will take the field in less than 24 hours. Check here for live updates from several gridiron practices (Mariner, Marysville-Pilchuck, Jackson and Archbishop Murphy).

Meanwhile, practices for other fall sports start Monday.

Speaking of cross country, I have heard rumblings that at least two of our local squads will be very special this season: The Glacier Peak High girls team and the Jackson High boys team. Last year Jackson placed second at the Class 4A state championships. Now the Timberwolves, guided by coach Eric Hruschka, are ferocious again despite losing some outstanding competitors who graduated.

How good is Jackson? It is ranked No. 13 in the country in the 2009 Harrier Super 25 preseason rankings, released Friday. Jackson is the second-highest ranked squad in Washington; Ferris of Spokane is No. 1 in America.
