Mariner edges E-W to remain unbeaten

EVERETT – Carlos Betancourt scored the game-winning goal with about five minutes to play as the Mariner boys soccer team remained undefeated, edging Edmonds-Woodway 2-1 Friday night in a non-conference game at Goddard Stadium.

Mariner (4-0 overall) is “very quick. They’re good,” Edmonds-Woodway coach Tony Gilman said. “They come straight at you.”

Edmonds-Woodway (2-2-1) is rebuilding but still hopes to make a run at the Western Conference South Division title, Gilman said. The Warriors lost eight starters to graduation and 10 players overall from last year’s team that was 9-0 in league games and 14-0-1 overall in the regular season.

Junior midfielder Micah Hoffman scored from about 20 yards out 23 minutes into the first half to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead at the break.

Mariner’s Mike Desimone tied the score on a penalty kick five minutes into second half. He also assisted on Betancourt’s game-winner.
