SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — Yanina Sherwood pitched a four-hitter and Emery Tulio broke a tie with a two-run double in the fourth inning as the Mill Creek Little League major-division softball team opened play in the West Region tournament Sunday with a 3-1 victory over Southern California.

Mill Creek, the Washington state champion, took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Reese Westman walked, moved to second on an illegal pitch and eventually came around to score on an error.

California tied the game in third on an RBI single by Alexis Marrero.

Mill Creek grabbed the lead for good in the fourth when Tulio’s one-out double to left field scored Gabrielle Raysbrook and Addison Bale.

Sherwood struck out seven and walked three in her six-inning complete game.

With the win, Mill Creek earned a bye on Monday. The team’s next game is scheduled for 4 p.m. Tuesday against either Utah or Hawaii.
