Pac-10 women roundup: Walker’s last-second layup does it for No. 13 Cal

TEMPE, Ariz. — Ashley Walker’s layup with 1.8 seconds remaining gave No. 13 California a 54-53 win over Arizona State on Sunday.

Dymond Simon hit a 3-pointer with 8.7 seconds to go to put Arizona State up 53-52. But that left enough time for one more possession for California (11-2, 2-0 Pac-10). Kelsey Adrian missed a layup but Walker got the loose ball underneath for the game-winner.

Simon’s shot capped a 13-2 run over nearly five minutes for the Sun Devils (8-6, 0-2).

Natasha Vital scored 17 of her 19 points in the second half, including a go-ahead basket with 39 seconds left to give the Bears a 52-50 lead.

No. 11 Stanford 70, Arizona 61

TUCSON, Ariz. — Jeanette Pohlen made five 3-pointers to score 15 points, as No. 11 Stanford held off a late Arizona rally for a 70-61 victory Sunday.

The Cardinal (11-3, 2-0 Pac-10) limited Arizona to four field goals for nearly 16 minutes of the second half to take a 65-40 lead.

But Arizona (7-6, 0-2) responded with a 17-0 run, capped by Reiko Thomas’ 3-pointer, to pull within 65-57.

USC 78, Oregon St. 54

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — USC (8-5, 2-0 Pac-10) had a season-high 15 steals in a strong defensive effort as the Women of Troy powered past visiting Oregon State (9-3, 0-2) for a 78-54 win on Sunday. USC recieved a season-high 20 points from Brynn Cameron, 19 from Heather Oliver and 12 from Briana Gilbreath.

Oregon 73, UCLA 56

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Sophomore forward Ellie Manou scored the first bucket of the game, and Oregon never gave up its lead. Taylor Lilley led all scorers with 21, and added a game-high tying five assists as well as a game-high four steals for Oregon (4-8, 1-1). UCLA fell to 10-3 overall, 1-1 Pac-10.

CHENEY — The Eastern Washington University women’s basketball team is off to its best Big Sky Conference start in four years at 2-0 after defeating Sacramento State. The Eagles improved to 7-8 overall with the win. Julie Piper led the way offensively for the Eagles, scoring 21 points on 7-of-12 shooting.
