Prep boys basketball: Shorewood 55, Mountlake Terrace 54

SHORELINE — With three seconds remaining, junior center Josh Hawkinson hit two clutch free-throws to put Shorewood up by four, and all Mountlake Terrace could do was put up an uncontested 3-pointer as time expired, as the Thunderbirds were able to defeat the previously unbeaten Hawks 55-54 in a Wesco 3A boys basketball game on Saturday night.

With the win on Senior Night, Shorewood was able to avenge their 10-point loss early in the season to Mountlake Terrace, a loss that happened without Hawkinson, who on this night, along with his game-clinching free-throws, finished with 15 points, six rebounds and seven blocks.

Hawkinson was fouled in a loose ball scramble with three Mountlake Terrace players, including senior post Ryan Shannon, who left shortly after with a possible injury, according to Shorewood coach Marv Morris.

“This was a very physical game,” said Morris. “There definitely could’ve been more fouls called, but the refs just let us play.”

Along with the game’s physical play, Morris added a few keys to his team’s victory over the third-ranked Hawks.

“It was a back-and-forth game that just came down to defense. We just managed to mix it up with zone and man with a lot of intensity.”

In addition to Hawkinson, the Thunderbirds were paced by junior point guard Ben Andrews who handled Terrace’s pressure well, and senior forward Semir Kadiric, who according to Morris, “Did all the little things well, and did a great job at boxing out.”

With the win Shorewood secured the number two seed in next week’s Wesco 3A district 1 playoffs.
