Tips notes: Miettinen, Smith invited to NHL draft combine

Everett also announced it will open the 2024-25 season at home on Sept. 21.

EVERETT — Two members of the Everett Silvertips were invited to the NHL scouting combine.

Center Julius Miettinen and defenseman Tarin Smith were among the 100 players invited to the combine, which began Monday and continues through Saturday in Buffalo, N.Y. The combine assesses the top prospects for the 2024 NHL draft.

The 18-year-old Miettinen is coming off a rookie season in which he registered 31 goals and 36 assists in 66 games. The 6-foot-3, 207-pounder from Finland was ranked 19th among North American skaters in the NHL Central Scouting Service’s final rankings for the 2024 draft.

The 18-year-old Smith, who was also a rookie, had eight goals and 36 assists in 67 games last season. The 6-foot-1, 176-pound native of Porcupine Plain, Saskatchewan, was ranked 38th among North American skaters by the NHL Central Scouting Service.

The NHL draft takes place June 28-29 in Las Vegas. Both Miettinen and Smith are expected to be selected in the early rounds of the draft.

Tips to open 2024-25 season on Sept 21

Everett announced that it will open the 2024-25 season at home on Saturday, Sept. 21. The Tips will host the Vancouver Giants at 6 p.m. at Angel of the Winds Arena. Everett bested Vancouver in the first round of last season’s playoffs, winning the best-of-seven series in five games.

Training camp ahead of the 2024-25 season is set to begin in late August.

Everett signs second-rounder Pisani

The Tips signed defenseman Jaxon Pisani, a second-round pick in this year’s WHL prospects draft, to a WHL scholarship and development agreement. He’s eligible to join the team full-time in the 2025-26 season.

Pisani, who hails from Sturgeon County, Alberta, was selected 39th overall during May’s draft. The 5-foot-10, 150-pounder played the past season with the St. Albert Flyers U15 team, recording nine goals and 37 assists in 34 games to help the Flyers win the league championship.

Pisani is the second member of Everett’s draft class to sign with the team, joining first-rounder Mirco Dufour. The Tips are still waiting on first-overall selection Landon DuPont, who was granted exceptional status by the league and is therefore eligible to play full-time in 2024-25 as a 15-year-old.
