The people and sea creatures of Brier are set to get together for a casual evening of fun beginning at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 11 for the SeaScare Festival and Brier Realty Porch Light Parade.
The third year for this local event, Seascare was hatched by Brier Park Board members as an event to replace Brierfest. The event is quickly becoming an annual tradition with its sea themed parade, car show, outdoor cinema and other events centered in the downtown business core of Brier.
For parade participants, Seascare gets underway at 6 p.m. for check-in and line up on the north side of 232nd on Brier Road. Participants can also pre-register for the parade on-line-at www.ci.brier.wa.us/ seascare. All sea creatures, octopi, pirates, boats and other mobile, nautically themed concepts are welcome to join the procession, which begins at 7 p.m. at the library (232nd) and moves south down Brier Road ending just past Brier Realty (238th). Prizes will be awarded in several categories.
Grand Marshall, Brier mayor Gary Starks, will be riding in a decorated float with the six Royal SeaScare Court kids, chosen from parade entries. Sea Princesses include Olivia Snider, 7; Kelly Herbig, 7; and Zoe Bellecy, 9. Sea Pirates are Conner Worman, 7; Alex Bakker, 6; and Tillie Seger, 8. The new official SeaScare Mascot will be unveiled during the parade.
This year residents and businesses are encouraged to decorate their yards or houses with outdoor lighting (such as Christmas lights) in the SeaScare theme. Displays will be judged on creativity before the event and the winners announced and prizes given during the parade.
From 6:30-8:30 p.m., the Brier Realty Kids Carnival will offer games and activities in the Brier Realty parking area. At the same time, a food drive benefiting Food Lifeline will accept donations in the barrel near Jason’s Java. The Friends of the Brier Library will also be hosting a book sale next to Brier Grocery.
New this year to the event is a free pie eating contest, while the car show returns with local classic cars and race cars on display. Musical entertainment by KD and District Pipe Band is also planned.
Licensed businesses in Brier will display products and services during the local business trade show set up between Jason’s Java and Brier Grocery. Beverages, food and other services will also be offered by several Brier merchants.
At 8:30 p.m. the famous Reverend Chumleigh comes to town again for Outdoor Cinema, featuring the classic SeaScare theme movie “Atlantis, The Lost Continent,” preceded by a cartoon. Bring lawn chairs to the Neapolis parking lot.
