Embrace Shoreline Schools event

The second Embrace Shoreline Schools Day will be 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 27. The event is a joint effort between churches, the school district, neighborhood associations, community members and the PTA to beautify the grounds of local schools.

During the first event in May, dozens of volunteers gathered at the district’s nine elementary schools and two middle schools to weed, mulch and clean up the grounds. Some neighborhood groups have continued to work on landscaping projects through the summer.

Volunteers should bring their own hand tools and gloves and can show up that day without signing up.

Ridgecrest celebrates new playground

About 600 people turned out for the Ridgecrest Elementary School Barbecue Friday Sept. 5.

After the barbecue there was a dedication ceremony to thank those who supported the new playground. The Ridgecrest PTA thanked the Shoreline School District and Shoreline School Board for their support of capital funds used for the project.

Board members Maren Norton and Dick Potter were on hand with Superintendent Sue Walker and Capital Projects Supervisor Rena Jackson.

The Ridgecrest Neighborhood Association, represented by board members Dick Nicholson, Diane Bunce and Patty Hale, was instrumental in securing City of Shoreline mini-grants for the playground, according to a press release.

Parent and former PTA president Jeff Sackett was singled out for his contribution of time, energy and determination to see the project through to completion. Local businesses, including North City Lumber and Frank Lumber were recognized for their contributions.

New Ridgecrest Principal Cinco Delgado cut the ribbon at the ceremony.
