The Lynnwood Arts Commission presents Thistle Theatre’s production of “Jack and the Beanstalk” at noon Wednesday, Aug. 18 at Lynndale Park Amphitheater, located at 18927 72nd Avenue W. in Lynnwood.

“Fee-fi-fo-fum!” Silly Jack trades his only cow for five beans — five magical beans, that is. What does he find when he climbs to the top of the beanstalk? The classic English tale comes alive with Bunraku and other puppets of all sizes.

Thistle Theatre specializes in Bunraku, which is an ancient Japanese art form. Although the style has been modified for modern audiences and performer, the basic idea remains the same: the puppets are operated by puppeteers who dress entirely in black to symbolize their invisibility.

This free, one hour performance is part of the Mervyn’s Wonderstage Performance Series for Youth and is suitable for 5-11 year olds and their families. The series is sponsored by the Lynnwood Arts Commission and City of Lynnwood Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department, Mervyn’s and by a grant from the Washington State Arts Commission.

In case of rain, the performance is moved indoors to Lynndale Elementary School Gym, located at 7200 191st Street SW. in Lynnwood. For more information call the Lynnwood Recreation Center at 425-771-4030.
