More reasons to oppose museum eviction

Here, I’ll try to share briefly some of the ideas I’ve recently submitted to the Shoreline School Board and Shorewood Design Task Force, presenting what I believe are new perspectives on why the Shoreline Historical Museum should remain in the Old Ronald Schoolhouse on the Shorewood High School campus after the forthcoming remodel now being designed by Bassetti Architects and the Design Task Force. Some of my reasons I have not yet seen articulated in any of the other public materials, including earlier articles and recent letters in the Enterprise, and Shoreline City Council Resolution No. 286. Briefly, here are summaries of two of these reasons:

I: The museum is already a major instructional asset to the school district, and is being used as such by teachers at many levels (25,000 reported student visits from classes throughout the district so far). Perhaps with collaboration between district staff and teachers with museum designers and implementers, it could be made even more “student-friendly.” So, it belongs close to the heart of a campus like Shorewood High School.

II: A investment has been made (both in money and in time contributed by many individuals) in creating a museum with exhibits that blend well with the historic Ronald School building, interpreting the school and its history well, within the context both of school environments and local architectural styles. So, “evicting the museum” to another location would be unjustifiably wasteful of past investment and future potential, especially in these economic hard times.

This is a short introduction to a detailed “Comments” document that I sent to the Shorewood Design Team, and would be glad to send to anyone who e-mails me at jobobmoore@gmail.com to request it.
