Students raise money for charity
More than two dozen students from Jackson High School recently walked from the school to the Space Needle to help raise money for the American Cancer Society. One hundred percent of the total amount raised, $1,600, will go to the organization.
Those involved met at the school at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 15. With a few stops along the way for donuts, lunch and water breaks, the students walked along the Bothell-Everett Highway and the Burke Gilman Trail until 6:30 p.m. that night, when they arrived at the Space Needle and visited the observation deck.
The event was coordinated by two Jackson High School seniors, Jesse Hind and Brian Cutter. Hind’s mom, Sam, said another Space Needle Walk is being planned for Spring 2004.
Students involved in the walk include: Jesse Hind, Brian Cutter, Justin Brook, Dennis Tang, Quoc Nguyen, Kevin Park, Jae ha Oh, Liz Copeland, Nancy Ing, Vonna Jones, Lauren Bennett, Kara Jones, Wendy Hedington, Kevin Hambley, Michele Clark, Drew Heckathorn, Aubry Walter, Jeff Luangreth, Kathy Phan, Bob Whitney, Eric Gillette, Kale Roberts, Justin Ricarte, Whitney Wu, Karen Ling, Nicole Carter and Nicholas Hinde.
Sponsors needed for jazz fest trip
Heatherwood Jazz Band students this year are planning to attend the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival in Moscow, Idaho.
The opportunity will allow the students to compete with other middle schools from across the nation and Canada, attend workshops led by world-class artists, and hear performances by artists such as trombonist Slide Hampton, saxophonist Paquito D’Rivera and trumpeter Pete Candoli. Last year, one of Heatherwood Jazz Band’s students, saxophonist Dan Wager, earned 1st Place Junior Division Woodwind Soloist at the festival.
Because the total cost of the trip is $11,000, students are working to raise funds to attend the festival.
Those interested in making a donation or sponsoring a student can contact band director Dave Stangland at dstan@everett.wednet.edu or at 425-385-6461.
