Speak out now or be faced with six-story buildings

Heads up! On April 3 the Shoreline Planning Commission passed a plan to allow 80-foot buildings (six stories plus an additional 15 feet for elevators, HVAC and cell phone towers — if you are concerned about radiation) adjacent to single-family residences. This affects 70 parcels of land in the city. Is that vacant piece of property or strip mall near your house zoned commercial or regional business or industrial? Better find out and take action now or one day you will wake up with an 80-foot building (albeit screened by an 8-foot fence and 10-foot trees) looming over your neighborhood, with attendant problems of traffic, parking, safety, etc. If you aren’t sure about zoning, you can go to Planning and Development Services (1110 N. 175th St., phone 206-546-1811). Be sure to look at the zoning map, not the comprehensive plan. The latter is touted as the “vision for Shoreline,” but, as my neighbors and I have discovered, is not what developers and the city consider when making permitting decisions.

The City Council will make a final decision on this matter in April. When? Call the agenda line, 206-546-2190, or the council at 206-546-1303. Last chance to speak up for your neighborhood and quality of life!
