Sustainability Strategy for review

Published 1:18 pm Thursday, April 10, 2008

A standard definition of sustainability is meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. The Shoreline City Council formalized the community value by establishing it as a Council Goal. That goal has led to the release of the proposed Shoreline Sustainability Strategy.

Following a review by the Planning Commission and Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Board, the council will hold a public hearing on the proposed strategy at its Monday, April 14, meeting. The meeting begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Mt. Rainier Room of the Shoreline Conference Center, 18560 First Ave. NE.

Council will continue discussion and consider adoption of the proposed strategy in May.

Because the universe of “sustainability” is so vast, the proposed strategy provides overarching direction for future efforts through guiding principles, focus areas, new tools, available resources, and an evaluation of existing programs and staff capacity needed to implement more ambitious projects.

The proposed strategy is available for review online at www.cityofshoreline.com or at City Hall, 17544 Midvale Avenue N. For more information, contact project manager Juniper Nammi at 206-546-8805 or jnammi@ci.shoreline.wa.us.

Reimaging plans for LFP Towne Centre

Plans are underway for the future of the Lake Forest Park Towne Centre. Madison Marquette, owner and manager, is moving forward with the re-imaging plans for the neighborhood shopping center, which was built in 1964 and last remodeled in 1987. The re-imaging project will produce a fresh new look for the Towne Centre which includes new facades, signage, and amenities throughout the entire mall. Construction is slated to start mid-April, once permits have been approved by the City of Lake Forest Park. The project should take an estimated six to nine months pending weather and other unknown factors.

The work will take place in three phases, beginning with the south wing of the center and concluding with the north wing upper level stores. The new façade will produce a contemporary design through utilizing earth tones and creating clean structural lineage throughout Lake Forest Park Towne Centre. Stores will remain open and operate at normal business hours during construction. Madison Marquette will accommodate merchants, residents, and customers with the intent of creating an enhanced shopping center for all to enjoy.
