Howard Putnam, former chief executive officer of Southwest Airlines, has joined the board of advisers at Bothell-based Dexterra Inc. Putnam, who lead Southwest from 1978 through 1981, will provide advice on growth and partnership strategies for Dexterra, which specializes in automation and mobile enterprise computer applications.

Pat Brown was selected as leader of the month for October at Meridian Yachts in Arlington.

New Business

Don Puckett will open Cedar Avenue Bakery later this month at 1008 Cedar Ave. in Marysville. Puckett, who was raised in Everett, recently returned to the area after 30 years. The bakery will offer breads, donuts, Danish pastries, cakes, cookies, pies and espresso drinks. There will be a drive-up window and inside tables for customers of the business, which will be open Monday through Saturday.

Events

Downtown Everett’s merchants are sponsoring holiday horse-and-carriage rides 1-4 p.m. Dec. 13 and 14. The rides will start at the Frontier Bank parking lot on the corner of Hewitt Avenue and Wetmore Street. The charge is $5 per person with a donation of a nonperishable food item for the Volunteers of America food bank. The rides are part of the merchants’ holiday promotion and benefits local charities.

U.S. Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.) will be the guest speaker at the Snohomish County Economic Development Council’s annual dinner. The dinner will be 5-8 p.m. Dec. 16 at the Everett Golf and Country Club, 1500 52nd St., Everett. Edmonds Community College President Jack Ohara, Everett Community College President Charlie Earl and out-going Snohomish County Executive Bob Drewel also will be honored. Paine Field will host a holiday open house 3-6 p.m. Dec. 18 at the airport’s main terminal and conference room off Airport Road in south Everett. To make reservations for the free event, call 425-353-2110, ext. O. Those attending are invited to bring a can of food for a holiday food drive or an unwrapped toy for the Toys for Tots program.

Ray Stephanson, the recently elected mayor of Everett, will talk to business and community leaders at Upside Downtown’s monthly meeting on Dec. 19. Holiday drives

Haggen Food & Pharmacy is offering its annual "Sing from the Heart" program as a way to raise donations for local food banks. Under the program, groups perform at a Haggen store, and in exchange, the supermarket donates a $50 gift certificate in each group’s name to the Salvation Army or a food bank. Last year, local community groups, choirs and schools raised more than $5,800 by donating their time and talent for the effort. Groups interested in performing on the afternoons of Dec. 12-14 can call Haggen’s Stanwood store at 360-629-4400, the Marysville store at 360-530-7700, or the Lake Stevens store at 425-377-7100.

Pignataro Volkswagen in Everett is serving as a drop-off center for toys and donations to benefit the Snohomish County Center for Battered Women. People can bring new, unwrapped toys, donations or old, unwanted cellular phones to Pignataro, 10633 Evergreen Way, by Dec. 15.
