Arlington

Make a wreath at garden workshop

The Arlington Garden Club’s workshop series “How to Turn your Thumb Green” continues Saturday with a hands-on wreath-making workshop.

Participants may purchase the wire wreath form at the workshop for $3. Bring gardening gloves, hand pruners, evergreen boughs, holly, dried weeds, etc., for the wreath. Materials will be provided if you don’t have any.

The workshop will be 10-11:30 a.m. at the Boys &Girls Club, 18513 59th Ave. NE. Space is limited. Call 360-403-7769 to reserve a spot. A donation of $2 is requested.

Edmonds

Prizes available for holiday lights

Nominations are being accepted for the Edmonds in Lights Christmas decorating contest.

Prizes include a one-night stay for two at the Captain Whidbey Inn including lodging, dinner and breakfast; dinner for two aboard the Spirit of Washington dinner train; dinner for two at Girardi’s in Edmonds and gift certificates to Edmonds shops.

Distinguished alumni honored

Edmonds Community College will honor its 2004 Distinguished Alumni at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Edmonds Conference Center, 201 Fourth Ave. N.

Honorees are Sterling Sankey, senior vice president at Bank of America; Laura Sonmore, a member of the Mountlake Terrace City Council; and Stephen James Hyde, a doctoral candidate studying geography and an instructor at the University of Washington.

Everett

Forums to explore seniors’ ideas

The city of Everett will sponsor two forums this week to explore ideas for future senior activities and the possibility of a new activity center.

The forums are Thursday – at 12:30 p.m. for those who use the senior center and at 7 p.m. for others – at the Everett Senior Activity Center, 3025 Lombard Ave.

The city hired Ballard-King and Associates with the assistance of a $7,500 grant from Snohomish County to study the recreational needs of seniors. Possible amenities for a new center include a pool, sauna, racquetball courts, soccer fields, a weight room, classrooms and more.

Everett Transit kicks off toy drive

Everett Transit on Monday kicked off its second annual Toys for Tots campaign.

Mayor Ray Stephanson and representatives from the U.S. Marine Corps and Fred Meyer launched the toy drive at Everett Station. Toys for Tots is a Marine Corps program.

Members of Everett Transit’s Amalgamated Transit Union Local 883 will help collect new, unwrapped toys for children of all ages until Dec. 21.

There are three ways to participate.

* Hand a toy to any Everett Transit driver.

* Drop off toys at Everett Station, 3201 Smith Ave., or in the lobby of the Wall Street Building, 2930 Wetmore Ave.

* Bring toys to help bus drivers “stuff a bus” at two events: 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday at Fred Meyer, 8530 Evergreen Way, or 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Dec. 18 at Fred Meyer, 2905 Bothell-Everett Highway.

Island County

Culinary party set for Wednesday

The annual Holiday Party for members and guests of the Culinary Art Society is 6:30-8:30 Wednesday at the Camano Senior and Community Center, 606 Arrowhead Drive on Camano Island.

Category 1 for competition is holiday hors d’oeuves and Category 2 is holiday sweets. Members bringing a competition item must be set up by 6:15.

When members receive three first-place awards in a year they receive the Graham Kerr Award. Those not participating may bring a dish to share in the potluck.

Members and guests also may participate in the cookie exchange. Those who bring six dozen of one kind of holiday cookie get to take home six dozen assorted cookies.

Those guests or members not bringing a presentation or potluck item pay $5.

Lynnwood

Items sought for holiday baskets

Several low-income senior housing complexes in Lynnwood are looking for donations of specific products to be added to holiday baskets.

The complexes are Pepperwood, Scriber Pointe, Lynn Woods and Lynn Crest.

Items sought include sparkling cider, canned hams, tins of cookies, boxes of Satsuma oranges, boxes of chocolates, bags of nuts, money and gift card donations for grocery shopping. Donations are needed by Friday.

Marysville

Free after-school program for kids

All Marysville Middle School students are invited to a free after-school program 2:30-5:30 p.m. at the school cafeteria, 4923 67th St. NE today through Monday.

Sponsored by the school and the Marysville Parks and Recreation Department, the program offers students the option of doing homework, playing games, creating crafts, hanging out with friends, special events, playing air hockey, foosball, table tennis and more. Registration forms are available at the school or the parks office, at Jennings Memorial Park, 6915 Armar Road.

Firefighters and Santa visit kids

Santa will be riding with Marysville firefighters as they visit children and collect donations for the Marysville Food Bank.

Firefighters are visiting neighborhoods Dec. 22 with a fire engine decorated with holiday lights, playing Christmas carols and handing out candy canes.

The Santa Run will visit as many neighborhoods as possible, but emergency calls and poor weather make it difficult to say when Santa and the firefighters will be in a particular neighborhood, district spokesman Nathan Trauernicht said.

Mill Creek

Subdivisions go to hearing examiner

A pair of proposed subdivisions in the Mill Creek area are going before the Snohomish County hearing examiner today and Wednesday.

The Meadowbrooke subdivision, a 10.72-acre plat with 77 proposed single-family homes, will be discussed at 10:30 a.m. today in the hearing examiner’s office, 2802 Wetmore Ave., Everett. The project is located on the east side of 35th Avenue SE at 162nd Place SE.

Bellemont Heights, a 70-lot, 14.75-acre plat, is up for a re-zone at 9 a.m. Wednesday, also in Everett. The project is located between 212th and 215th streets SE, east of 39th Avenue SE.

Monroe

Chamber holds holiday luncheon

The Monroe Chamber of Commerce will have its monthly membership luncheon at 11:45 a.m. Dec. 14 at the Rock Church, 16891 146th St. SE.

This will be a holiday celebration with a turkey luncheon served by chamber staff. The program will review the accomplishments of 2004 and discuss goals for 2005.

Volunteers win state awards

Two volunteers for the Sky Valley Food Bank have won Washington Food Coalition awards.

Pearl White, 97, has volunteered for more than 25 years, said Julie Morris, who oversees the food bank. He has served on the board, acted as interim director, bookkeeper, secretary and treasurer.

Kathleen King has volunteered for nearly 20 years, sorting food, decorating food drive barrels, and doing painting and computer work. She often serves coffee and hot chocolate to people standing in the cold, waiting for holiday food.

Mountlake Terrace

Holiday lights contest planned

A holiday lights contest will take place in the city this month.

The City Council will serve as judges. Entry forms are available at City Hall and must be submitted by Dec. 17. A $10 entry fee will be collected to benefit the Recreation Pavilion Scholarship Fund, providing activity program scholarships for the youth of Mountlake Terrace.

Mukilteo

Santa will visit the lighthouse

Santa will make his annual visit to the Mukilteo Lighthouse noon-3 p.m. Saturday.

Additionally, the Lighthouse Gift Shop will be open 10 a.m.-4 p.m. the next two Saturdays for holiday shopping.

Proceeds go toward lighthouse restoration projects. The lighthouse is at 604 Front St.

Snohomish

Reception set for chief finalists

The city will hold a community reception Wednesday for anyone to meet the police chief finalists.

The reception is 5-7:30 p.m. in the Waltz Building, 116 Ave. B. Refreshments will be served.

A panel made up of Snohomish residents, business owners, a City Council member, a police officer and a member of the city staff management team will interview the finalists that day. They will report to city manager Larry Bauman. Bauman will conduct a final round of interviews Friday. He is expected to announce the new chief next week.

Special meeting tonight on plan

The City Council will have a special meeting today on its comprehensive plan update.

The meeting will start at 6 tonight at the George Gilbertson Boardroom, 1601 Ave. D. The meeting is expected to last an hour. The council will discuss school and traffic impact mitigation fees.

After that work session, the planning commission plans a public hearing Dec. 15 and the council will have a public hearing Dec. 21.

A regular meeting will take place afterward. Items on the agenda include: the transportation plan update, sale of surplus property and an increase in the loan for the Centennial Trail.

Stanwood

Homes sought for puppies, kittens

The Northwest Organization for Animal Help has 14 puppies and 32 kittens available for adoption this holiday season.

Adoptions cost $100. Animals have been spayed or neutered, given vaccinations, implanted with a microchip for identification and come with a collar and tag.

NOAH, located off I-5 at exit 215 in Stanwood, is open Monday through Friday 11 a.m.-6 p.m. and weekends until 5 p.m.
