Haugen’s district benefits

Sen. Mary Margaret’s 10th Legislative District would get $134 million under the Senate transportation plan that the Democrat from Camano Island put together. Here’s where the money would go:

* $61.3 million: Improving several intersections and adding a climbing lane on Highway 532 between I-5 and Camano Island. Some traffic lights would be added. Highway 532’s intersection with 72nd Avenue NW in Stanwood would be realigned.

* $31 million: Keystone Ferry Terminal work. Money would go to help state rebuild or relocate the ferry terminal so larger ferries can dock there. The current pre-World War II class of boats needs to be retired.

* $18 million: Widening the Highway 532 bridge to Camano Island. The Gen. Mark W. Clark Memorial Bridge is only two lanes wide, so anytime there is an accident, the only route to the island is blocked, often for hours.

The new bridge would also be two lanes wide, but the shoulders would be wide enough to allow cars involved in an accident to pull to the side of the road.

* $17.8 million: The money would finish the ongoing bid to rebuild the I-5 interchange at 172nd Street NE.

Most of the money would pay for a cloverleaf ramp that would allow eastbound 172nd Street traffic to loop around to the right to enter southbound I-5, ending the left-turn backups that currently tie up traffic. Some money would be spent improving the roads leading up the bridge. The bridge itself is being widened to six lanes right now.

* $5 million: This money would help locate a site for a potential commuter rail stop in Stanwood. Such a station could be used if Sound Transit’s commuter rail service were extended north, or if some other form of commuter rail were established. The station also could be used as a bus stop.

* $476,000: The money would be used to build sidewalks near Lakewood High School on 172nd Street NE in Lakewood. The sidewalk would be built on the south side of the road from the high school to 19th Drive NE.
