50 years ago (1956)
It was Ladies Day at the Everett Golf and Country Club. Mary Ward won in the first division with 14. Marje Duryee and Irene Stephenson tied for second with 13. Mildred Slonaker paced the second division with 10, followed by Cecile George, Fran Johnson and Dorothy Jones in a tie for second place. Betty Moore won in the third division with 10.
Two veteran members of an Everett High School Seagull defensive line that had allowed just two touchdowns in the past three games were guard Leon Van Rossen and tackle Dennis LeMaster. End Bill Rucker made them a sharp-tackling trio.
25 years ago (1981)
What started out as a hobby in the basement of Carol Pehling’s Snohomish home turned into a one-woman attempt to add meaning to lives of seniors. Working out of a large converted chicken coop on her property, Pehling produced clay castings that she distributed to Everett’s Bethany Home and Senior Citizens Center.
Shawn Hart, an Eagle Scout and senior at Arlington High School, was chosen to be the 1982 national Boy Scout representative. Among his duties would be briefing President Reagan on the future of scouting in America.
