RENO, Nev. – State game wardens are investigating an increasing number of incidents they call “thrill killings,” a new and disturbing form of poaching of big game that is likely to result in the most violations in more than a decade.

Some of the worst cases to date include:

* A group of five deer shot and killed, with their bodies left to rot in the mountains near Elko.

* A cow elk killed and a bull elk wounded in Lincoln County.

* A California bighorn sheep killed, its head removed, in the Santa Rosa Mountains.

Wardens said they don’t know who’s doing it.
