The Snohomish County Chapter of the American Red Cross is looking for volunteers to help in its disaster services department.

An orientation for prospective volunteers is planned for 7 p.m. Monday in the Boeing Room of the Chapter House, 2530 Lombard Ave., Everett.

Use the 26th Street entrance.

The program will include an overview of how the Red Cross helps victims of fires, floods, windstorms and other local disasters. Refreshments will be served. Volunteer applications will be available. The minimum age for disaster volunteers is 18.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is Monday. Here are some resulting closures:

Government: Federal, state and most local offices will be closed.

Schools: Closed.

Post offices: Closed, although express mail service continues.

Commerce: Most businesses will be open, but most banks will be closed.

Transportation: Community Transit and Sound Transit are on regular schedules, but some commuter routes will be canceled. Everett Transit is on a regular schedule. For ferry information, go to www.wsdot.wa.gov/ ferries or call 888- 808-7977.

  • Anyone interested in learning about United Way’s free tax preparation service is invited to an open house at 10 a.m. today. The event will be at the Everett Boys &Girls Club, 2316 12th St. The event’s date was incorrect in a story that appeared on Page B1 on Wednesday.

  • Khloe, Kate and Emma Garton of Everett recently donated their braids to Locks of Love. Shelbey Jackson recently ran a food drive on Lake Ki near Lakewood. Both Khloe’s and Shelbey’s names were spelled incorrectly in photo captions that ran on Page B3 in Wednesday’s Applause column.
