A stamp is forever

Invest in stamps? With the post office offering stamps that are good forever — no matter how high postal rates go — some see an investment opportunity.

But the real reason to stock up is convenience. There’s an 1918 stamp that’s worth $300,000 at auction, but you’d need to add nine of those annoying 2-cent stamps if you used it to mail a letter.

Spencer Hawes has a big decision to make: Stay for another year of hoops at the UW or go pro. John Sleeper says he hopes the 7-footer will return for his sophomore season. It’s a tough call. Some pluses and minuses:

Money: In the NBA, he’ll sign a three-year contract for about $5 million. At the UW, he gets free tuition, which, at the rate things are going, will cost something close to that pretty soon. Plus he can land a campus job cleaning things too high for other people to reach.

Lifestyle: At the UW, you get up at 7 a.m. and go to art history class. In the NBA, you get up at noon and nobody expects you to know anything about the Renaissance, although it might impress the groupies.

Memories: If he goes pro, he’ll never walk at graduation. But Mom and Dad will get over it when he buys them a small island.
