EVERETT – A fire in an apartment Monday afternoon that began after a heat lamp fell down and ignited a basket of clothes caused an estimated $30,000 in damage, Roger Westlund, a battalion chief with the Everett Fire Department said.

The fire was in a third-floor apartment in the 10100 block of Seventh Avenue SE. It was reported at 4:46 p.m. When firefighters arrived, the apartment was filled with smoke, he said.

No one was home, but firefighters took two cats and a pet lizard from the apartment, he said.

Ballot measure needs pro and con writers

The $17.8 billion roads and transit measure on the November ballot needs a few supporters and a few detractors.

County reports on land supply for growth

A study showing how much land Snohomish County has for development will be discussed at an open house scheduled for Wednesday night.

The meeting is planned from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the county’s East Administration Building, 3000 Rockefeller Ave., Everett.

The county’s report shows the amount of development occurring in the county’s urban areas. The report compares future population forecasts with what development is allowed in cities and unincorporated areas.

Arlington: Help sought to find missing man

The Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office is asking for help from anyone who may have seen Jack Francis Roys, 85.

Roys was last seen on June 21, said Rebecca Hover, a sheriff’s spokeswoman.

Police said there’s no evidence of foul play, but family members said it’s not like Roys to leave without telling relatives or neighbors where he was going, Hover said.

Roys’ 2001 silver two-door Chevrolet Impala also is missing. Roys is described at 5 feet 7 inches tall, weighing 185 pounds with gray hair and brown eyes. He lives in the 9000 block of 160th Street NE, Hover said.

Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff’s tip line at 425-388-3845.

Lynnwood: Arson suspected in store fire

Arson is suspected in a fire set to a mattress and a pallet Monday night outside the Aarons Sales and Lease, 20321 Highway 99.

The fire caused an estimated $2,000 of damage, said Marybeth O’Leary, spokeswoman for the Lynnwood Fire Department.

The fire was reported at 8:03 p.m. “I think it scorched the outside of the building,” she said. Two youths were spotted outside the building before the fire broke out and then were seen quickly leaving the area, she said.

The youths are thought to have used a match or lighter to start the fire, said Shannon Sessions, spokeswoman for the Lynnwood Police Department. The building was not seriously damaged and the business should not be affected, Sessions said.

Although there was another arson Sunday at a vacant business in the city on Scriber Lake Road, “they’re not connected at this time,” Sessions said. The suspects in the two fires “are totally different,” she said.

Objects should be removed from around the outside of buildings that could be used to set a fire, O’Leary said.

“Usually people interested in starting these types of small fires aren’t going to bring materials with them,” O’Leary said. “They’ll use materials on site.”

Anyone with information on the fire should call the police department at 425-744-6915.
