An open letter to the lower two-thirds

Dear Fantasy Footballer,
I know, I know. I can already hear it. Not another fantasy football expert, writing a column to point out that it might be a good idea to play Steven Jackson this week. But I don’t claim to be an expert. I’m just a guy — a guy with a really great job for finding information on fantasy football.
As a copy editor in the sports section of The Herald I have access to hundreds of NFL stories each week. And not just Associated Press articles, but notebooks and features from papers around the country, including Newsday, The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times, The Baltimore Sun and The Hartford Courant. And don’t forget I read every word our Seahawks beat writer Scott M. Johnson writes — which is A LOT.
For example, before one of my drafts last season I found an article about how Saints coach Sean Payton had fallen in love with a rookie wideout from Hofstra. Figuring that New Orleans had dealt Donte Stallworth to Philly for a reason, I took a flyer on Marques Colston in the last round of my draft. Result: I got a top-20 receiver for basically nothing.
So why should you, the owner of a highly successful fantasy football team, read this weekly column? Well, maybe you shouldn’t. But at last count, there were millions of fantasy football leagues in existence and two-thirds of the teams in those leagues aren’t successful. So somebody out there could use a little help.
Each week I’ll tackle the five biggest questions of the week in a who, what, where, how and why format. Let me dig through all the garbage to find those fantasy football nuggets that will help give you a leg up.
So if your team is floundering in the bottom two-thirds of your league, check out my column every Thursday in The Herald and find some answers. If your team is in the upper one-third, check it out anyway and find out how to stay there.
Didn’t get your question answered? E-mail all fantasy queries to Aaron Swaney at aswaney@heraldnet.com.
