BURIEN — Meadowdale out-shot Kennedy but Kennedy goalkeeper Ashley Engel was up to the challenge, making nine saves in a 2-0 Class 3A first-round girls soccer state playoff game Tuesday at Highline Stadium.
Kennedy (16-1-1 overall) got the only goal it needed off a corner kick in the 21st minute. Amanda Arntz pushed the ball about 5 yards onto the field and Jackie Thomas ripped it into the top, right corner for her 19th goal of the season.
“We came out a little nervous … The goal helped us relax a little bit,” Kennedy coach Doug Stannes said.
“You put your head down and aren’t concentrating and that’s when the goal happens,” Meadowdale coach Sean Griffin said.
“But our young defense has been fantastic,” Griffin added.
The Mavericks start just two seniors.
Meadowdale’s offense was slowed by a knee injury to forward Julia Fjortoft.
“That was a factor,” Griffin said.
Two minutes after Thomas scored, Arntz dribbled around a Meadowdale defender and put the ball in the net from 12 yards out.
