50 years ago (1957)

R.M. Jacobson, 3721 Colby Ave., pointed to the Nov. 11, 1907, date on a $1 certificate he had as a memento of the Panic of 1907, a time remembered by many county old-timers. The certificate, 50 years old then on this day, was issued by the clearing house for the associated banks of Snohomish County.

A young pilot from Skagit County experiencing a problem with his carburetor icing up made an emergency landing 10 miles north of Everett on Highway 99. He was able to make a takeoff on the highway early this morning with help from the State Patrol, which blocked off traffic.

25 years ago (1982)

Three veteran employees of General Telephone of the Northwest, with combined service of more than 100 years, were soon to retire. They were: John Hayes, wrapping up 43 years; Leuvina Remboldt with over 34 years; and Gene Gunther, completing more than 42 years.

Melissa Snyder, a fifth-grader at Picnic Point Elementary School, was a hero and had a national award to prove it. She had saved the life of a 6-year-old boy who had fallen into a pond at Seattle’s Discovery Park. She attributed her quick action to a water safety training she received at Camp Fire’s Camp Killoqua.
