50 years ago (1958)
Everett led the state in an increase in bank debits during the month of January, according to figures just released by the research department of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco. Bank debits were usually a good indication of business. Everett increased 13 percent. Percentage increases for other state cities were Yakima, 7 percent; Bellingham, 3 percent; and Seattle, 2 percent.
Sgt. Ruth Dunn, a Women’s Army Corps receptionist and interviewer for new arrivals, was presented a letter of commendation and an engraved cigarette case, word came from Fort Sill, Okla. She was the first woman to ever receive such an award. Dunn was an Everett native and a graduate of the class of 1948 of Everett High School.
25 years ago (1983)
Dan Anderson was president of Everett’s annual Salty Sea Days festival, June 2-5. Members of the festival board, ready to crack the whip over preparations, included Ted Dusablon, vice president; Larry Boushey, secretary; Brent Middleton, treasurer; and Esther McAllister, parade chairwoman.
Area fire stations and service club members were busy collecting a mountain of donated clothing.
