Lake Stevens names high school students of month for February
The following students were recognized by the Lake Stevens School Board as outstanding secondary students recently.
Lake Stevens High School February students of the month were sophomores Sara Scott and Matthew Main, juniors Jessica Buell and Wyatt Lee and seniors Leah Grassl and Cameron Stevens.
Lakewood school counselor named Counselor of the Year
Lakewood High School’s Heidi Mendro recently was recognized as the state’s High School Counselor of the Year at the Washington School Counselor Association spring conference in Seattle.
Mendro was nominated by colleague Judith Fernandes for her exceptional work as a school counselor.
Lake Stevens schools name March Apple Award winners
The Lake Stevens School District has named its March Apple Award winners.
The employees were nominated and selected by their peers.
March recipients of the Apple Award are Tim Haines, principal at Sunnycrest Elementary School; Janice Bonilla, student body secretary for the district; Kathy Hermes, a Lake Stevens Middle School teacher; and Tess Mathis, a bus driver.
The awards will be presented at 7:30 p.m. April 23 at the Lake Stevens School Board meeting in the Educational Service Center, 12309 22nd St. NE.
Snohomish JROTC posts strong performance in Burlington
The Snohomish High School Marine Corps JROTC recently fared well at an 11-school competition at Burlington-Edison High School.
Color Guard No. 2, under the command of Cadet Sgt. Siera Countryman, placed first while Color Guard No. 1 placed second under the command of Cadet Gunnery Sgt. Deryk Machado.
The unarmed drill team placed first under the command of Cadet Maj. Elizabeth Macpherson. She also took first in the commander category.
The armed drill team placed first under the command of Cadet Capt. Sarah Winks. Winks also took first in the commander category.
The physical fitness team placed sixth under team leader Cadet Staff Sgt. Jolsen Martinez.
Cadet 1st Lt. Oliver Smith placed third for top male individual score for the physical fitness team.
The sporter rifle team placed sixth.
Cadet Staff Sgt. Chelan Call placed second in the sharpshooter category, and Cadet Staff Sgt. Josh Gauthier placed third.
In the unarmed drill down, Cadet Sgt. Amber Startzman placed fourth out of 35 other competitors along with Cadet Sgt. Naomi Wright placing sixth.
Armed drill down Cadet Staff Sgt. Kelsie Smith placed first, and Cadet Sgt. Tyler Minkel placed fifth out of about 35 competitors.
Snohomish High School is set to visit Spanaway Lake High School to compete with other area high schools for a final regional competition April 19.
Granite Falls schools name Success in Education winners
The Granite Falls School District has announced its third quarter Success in Education award winners.
Students Ryan Hillery, Michaela Dudder, Alacia Romack, Ciera Scown, Christian Arp, Shannon Krull and Teresa Mendenhall were honored at a March 19 school board meeting.
Success in Education Awards are presented four times a year to students who show an understanding of the importance of education and provide service to staff members or other students or in the community.
Arlington grad makes engineering dean’s list at University of Idaho
Gregory E. Brager, a 2007 graduate of Arlington High School, has been selected for the University of Idaho College of Engineering Dean’s List for the fall semester.
Brager is pursuing a degree in mechanical engineering. He will be recognized for his accomplishment during a convocation ceremony on April 18 at the University of Idaho.
He is the son of Dan Brager and Melinda Skyles, both of Arlington.
Marysville teacher honored by World Affairs Council
Ryan Hauck, a Marysville-Pilchuck High School teacher, was named world educator of the year March 13 by the World Affairs Council at a celebration at the Seattle Center Fisher Pavilion.
The World Educator Award honors an outstanding local teacher who has demonstrated dedication to bringing international issues into the classroom.
Hauck was honored for his successful development of a sister high school relationship in Nigeria and his efforts to teach Marysville youth about the world around them.
