Whidbey Island welcomes whales
Attend a big welcome-home party to greet returning gray whales.
Welcome the Whales Day Festival &Parade kicks off in Langley at 10 a.m. April 19.
Presented by Orca Network, the free family event includes educational activities, music, displays and a parade at 1:30 p.m.
A whale bell will be installed on First Street, in front of Music for the Eyes.
Gray whales feed on ghost shrimp at the shoreline. Public access from small waterside parks and bluffs make Langley one of the best places to view gray whales without disturbing them.

Soroptimists plan garage sale
Soroptimist International of Marysville plans its annual Junktique garage sale for Saturday. The event is 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Jennings Park Barn, 6915 Armar Road.
Volunteers needed for Tulalip MS walk
The National Multiple Sclerosis Washington Chapter is seeking volunteers for its fundraiser walk in Snohomish County on April 12 at the Tulalip Amphitheatre.
The walk needs volunteers for rest-stop staff, greeters, parking attendants and registration helpers.

Children’s hospital gets free books
Young patients at Children’s Hospital and Medical Center in Seattle will receive novels, audiobooks and graphic novels from readergirlz and the Young Adult Library Services Association
The donation notes Support Teen Literature Day on April 17, part of National Library Week, April 13-19. Books were donated by 20 publishers.
Stanwood park to get makeover
Small, triangular Lions Park, just east of downtown Stanwood, is getting a makeover for summer.
The city plans to replace the existing playground and basketball hoop at the park and build a new picnic shelter and parking places.
Although construction is already in progress, a late groundbreaking ceremony is planned for mid-April. For more information, call 360-629-4577.
