DUBLIN, Ohio — Mathew Goggin birdied four of the first five holes Friday before strapping in for a wild ride of birdies and bogeys that ultimately added up to an even-par 72 at the Memorial that tied him for the lead with two-time champion Kenny Perry, who recovered from a rugged start for a 71.

They were at 7-under-par 137, one shot clear of Jerry Kelly.

All those scores seemed so much lower on a Muirfield Village course that felt like a major with its ankle-deep rough that swallowed up errant shots and greens as slick as glass.

Just three players broke 70 on Friday, with Johnson Wagner turning in a remarkable 67. Twenty players couldn’t break 80.

LPGA Ginn Tribute: Karrie Webb continued to show off her Hall of Fame style at the Ginn Tribute in Mount Pleasant, S.C. — and just in time, Annika Sorenstam did, too.

Webb shot a 66 and shared the lead at 13-under with Sophie Gustafson (65) after two rounds of the LPGA tournament.

Sorenstam also had a 66, her lowest score in six career rounds at RiverTowne Country Club, and moved from a tie for 60th Thursday into a tie for eighth, seven shots back.

Principal Classic R.W. Eaks and Lonnie Nielsen shot 5-under-par 66s to share the first-round lead at the Principal Charity Classic in West Des Moines, Iowa.

Joey Sindelar, Tom Purtzer, Kirk Hanefeld and Mark McNulty were one stroke back. Loren Roberts, who finished second at Glen Oaks in 2006, was at 3-under along with Clarence Rose.

Wales Open: Scott Strange shot a 5-under-par 66 and extended his lead to four strokes after two rounds of the Wales Open in Newport, Wales.

Strange, a 31-year-old Australian, had a 1-under 34 on the back nine of the 2010 Celtic Manor Course, six strokes worse than his first round, when a 63 left him with a one-shot lead.

Strange was four shots ahead of Jeev Singh (68), Alvaro Velasco (68), Benn Barham (64) and English tour rookie Robert Dinwiddie, who eagled the last hole for a 65.

Ladies German Open: Michelle Wie shot a 3-under-par 69 to keep pace at the Ladies German Open, where she was tied for sixth, three shots off the lead after the rain-delayed second round.

The 18-year-old from Hawaii bogeyed her first hole but recovered with a stretch of three birdies in four holes midway through her round and a fourth birdie later at the Golfpark Gut Haeusern course northwest of Munich, Germany

Lora Fairclough of England, the 1998 German Open winner, had a 68 to take the lead at 10-under 134 at the $390,000 tournament on the Ladies European Tour.

Curtis Cup: Amanda Blumenherst and Stacy Lewis each won two matches to help the Americans take a 4-2 lead against Great Britain &Ireland at the Curtis Cup in St. Andrews, Scotland.

The United States has not lost these amateur matches since 1996, and they got off to a good start in miserable weather on the Old Course at St. Andrews, needing a few putts to go their way at the end.

Blumenherst and Tiffany Joh looked to be coasting in the morning foursome match by taking a 5-up lead through 12 holes until Breanne Loucks and Florentyna Parker won four of the next five. But on the 18th hole, Parker’s 6-foot birdie putt to halve the match just missed, giving the Americans a 2-1 lead after the morning session.

Sally Watson won both her matches for GB&I, including a foursomes victory with Michele Thomson over Mina Harigae and Jennie Lee.

NCAA Men’s Championship: Kevin Chappell shot a 4-under-par 68 to help UCLA take a three-stroke lead over Clemson and Southern California after the third round of the NCAA men’s Division I golf championship in West Lafayette, Ind.

The tournament ends today with the top 15 teams playing for the title.

Chappell also took the individual lead by four strokes over Clemson’s Kyle Stanley and Washington’s Nick Taylor.
