Mukilteo

Council to discuss community center site

The Mukilteo City Council is expected to resume its discussion today on where it should build the city’s new community center.

The meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Mukilteo City Hall, 4480 Chennault Beach Road.

The council voted earlier this year to tear down the aging Rosehill Community Center and replace it with a new building on the property. Preliminary plans indicated the new center would be built just south of Rosehill.

Now, the council is considering a plan to move the location of the new community center to another part of the property. If that happens, some council members believe that Rosehill should be left standing.

Council discusses homeless encampments

A proposed ordinance that would set rules regulating homeless encampments in Mukilteo could be approved today by the City Council.

The meeting is planned for 7 p.m. at Mukilteo City Hall at 4480 Chennault Beach Road.

City leaders want to avoid the predicaments faced in Bothell, Woodinville and Bellevue. Homeless encampments were made in those cities before the local governments had established codes to regulate them, according to Mukilteo city staff.

The city is unaware of any plans for homeless encampments in Mukilteo.

Snohomish

City hires consultant for lagoon cleanup

The City Council recently decided to pay $17,316 to HWA GeoSciences, Inc., of Lynnwood, for testing and inspection services in the city’s lagoon cleanup project.

The city needs to finish cleaning up soil contaminated with diesel and motor oil at a former sewer settling pond by Oct. 1, a deadline set by the state Department of Ecology. Otherwise, the city could face a fine.

The one-acre parcel near the Snohomish River sits next to a 25-acre lagoon, which had been used as a sewer settling pond before the city upgraded the sewer plant in 1996.

The city has set aside $450,000 this year for the clean-up project.

Sultan

Volunteers sought for library board

The city is seeking Sultan-area residents interested in serving on the Sultan Library Board. The library board makes recommendations to the City Council and acts as a liaison between the council and the Sno-Isle Regional Library System. The library system provides library services to residents of the area.

The library board meets at 9:30 a.m. on the second Thursday in March, June, September, and December at the Sultan Library.

To be considered for an appointment to the library board, send or deliver a brief letter to the Sultan Library at PO Box 580, 319 Main St., Sultan, WA, 98294. The letter should explain an applicant’s interest; a resume citing an application’s qualification also needs to be sent. Applications need to be accepted by 5 p.m. on July 19.
