Group still solicits funds to preserve forest ridge
The deadline is nearing for those who want to save a mountain ridge near Index from logging. They aim to secure $1.3 million to preserve the 133 acres of mature forest by Thursday, the deadline set by W.B. Foresters Inc. of Stanwood that owns the ridge.
The company has agreed to sell the land if the money is raised.
In late 2006, W.B. Foresters of Stanwood proposed logging Heybrook Ridge, saying that alders in the area are mature and need to be logged before they die. The company owns the forest and has a state permit to harvest trees there.
People in Index protested, saying that the logging would ruin the area’s scenic view and lower their property values. The company later withdrew its logging application after state officials determined there is fish habitat in the area.
In April, an anonymous donor pledged to pitch in $500,000 to preserve the mountain ridge.
Donations can be sent to Friends of Heybrook Ridge, P.O. Box 387, Index, WA 98256.

Online map shows new developments inside city
The city’s Web site has an updated construction and development activity map that shows what is being built in the city. The Web site address is www.ci.snohomish.wa.us.
The map features major commercial and housing projects including Snohomish Station, a major economic development on Bickford Avenue. The 400,000-square-foot center added Fred Meyer, Kohl’s and Home Depot stores. Those new businesses are expected to generate additional sales tax revenue for the city this year.
