MARYSVILLE — Hundreds of volunteers are expected to transform a portion of Asbury Field on Saturday in an event that should save the city of Marysville more than $20,000.
The baseball field, which is owned by the Marysville School District, has bleachers that have probably been there since the 1940s, said Jim Ballew, Marysville’s director of parks and recreation. Volunteers plan to tear down the bleachers and redo the standard-size field’s landscaping so it is appropriate for youth baseball. The extra space will be filled with trees, a trail and new signs, he said.
Volunteers from 10 Marysville churches will help with the project, Ballew said. Church leaders asked the city for ways they could help.
The city also partnered with the churches in April, when more than 400 volunteers landscaped a portion of Fourth Street.
“We had over 6,000 man hours into that project,” Ballew said.
Saturday’s event will last from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
