Super kid / Alicia Korn, 17 Sultan senior likes her small town because ‘it’s so close-knit’

Full schedule: Alicia plays soccer, basketball and softball for Sultan High. She’s also the president of ASB and is a member of the Future Business Leaders of America, pep club, the international club and marching band.
Color guard: During first three years in marching band, she played tuba and xylophone but is in color guard instead this year. Because of a scheduling conflict, she couldn’t play an instrument. Counting beats has helped her master color guard steps.
On her feet: Alicia’s captain of the soccer team and says it’s her favorite sport. She plays center midfield. “I just love it.”
Being president: She’s served in ASB before and likes holding the top spot. “It’s nice making decisions about the school.”
On leadership: “You have to lead by example. You can’t tell someone, ‘Oh don’t do that.’ And you go and do it. I believe if you’re a good leader and you start doing good things, people follow you.”
Chasing carts: Alicia works for Albertsons grocery store, returning carts and cleaning. She uses the money to pay sports fees and for senior stuff. She just bought a cap and tassel for graduation. “It’s scary.”
Keep planning: Alicia wants to go to college next year and study to be an event planner. She wanted to be a wedding planner, but with the bad economy, thinks event planning is a safer bet.
Wedding fan: She loves weddings because everyone is happy. Her favorite part of weddings is the reception.
Sultan native: Alicia has lived in Sultan all her life. “I like it a lot. Some people don’t like it because it’s small, but I like it because it’s so close-knit.”
Going the distance: Her longest trip was to Victoria, B.C., for a band trip. Alicia thought Victoria was really pretty.
Leaving home: She has mixed feelings about leaving for college next year. “I’m excited to go and be on my own because I’ve been going to school and living with my family for 18 years, but at the same time, I’m sad to leave high school and my friends and my family.”
One of the girls: She has parents and three sisters. She’s the second oldest. “It’s nice because we’re all going through the same things, girl things, but at the same time, they borrow your stuff, my clothes. But I still love them.”
Potter person: Alicia really enjoys reading the Harry Potter books. “It’s magical. It makes you think about crazy things.”
Global view: Her favorite class is current world issues. “We’re learning about the presidential election and things like that, which I’ve never really known about until now.”
