Arlington

High school winter concert is Thursday

Arlington High School bands, under the direction of John Grabow­ski, are scheduled to present a winter concert at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Byrnes Performing Arts Center, 18821 Crown Ridge Blvd.

The 180 members of the school’s three bands are set to perform works by composers Gustav Holst and Malcolm Arnold, as well as popular holiday favorites.

Auditorium doors open for seating at 6:30 p.m. for the free concert.

Learn to make wreaths at garden club class

Learn how to make a Christmas wreath at a popular annual workshop offered by Arlington Garden Club members.

The class is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Saturday in the community room at the Arlington Boys &Girls Club, 18513 59th Ave. NE.

For $3, nonmembers can participate. Wreath forms cost $4. Twine, wire and some greens, along with refreshments, are to be provided.

It’s a good idea to bring your own wreath form, clippers and greens, which can include dogwood branches, stems with berries or rose hips, moss, pine cones, rosemary, holly and ivy.

Granite Falls

Library friends invites public to meeting

The Friends of the Granite Falls Library invites the public to its meeting at 6 p.m. Dec. 17 at the library, 815 E. Galena St.

The Friends of the Granite Falls Library is a group that conducts book sales and other activities to raise funds for programs at the library. The group welcomes new volunteers.

Marysville

City approves utility rate hikes of 2 percent

The city of Marysville has approved an increase of 2 percent each in city water, sewer and surface-water management rates for 2009.

The actual rate varies depending on whether the customer lives inside the city, in its urban growth area or outside both, and on the size of pipeline. The increase was approved Monday.

Oak Harbor

Club sells Christmas trees to benefit projects

Oak Harbor Lions Club is selling a variety of Christmas trees from the Deming area.

The sale continues from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily until Dec. 23 at the lot next to the Oak Harbor Chamber of Commerce office, 32630 Highway 20.

All proceeds support community projects.

Stanwood

Concert to raise money for historical society

A Christmas cantata by Telemann and other music of the holiday season is scheduled to be presented at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Floyd Norgaard Cultural Center, 27108 102nd Ave. NW.

The concert features soprano Linda Tsatsanis, flutist Jeffrey Cohan and harpsichordist George Shangrow.

Tickets at the door are $10 for adults. Those age 16 and younger are free if accompanied by an adult.

Advance tickets are available at Snow Goose Bookstore, 8617 271st St. NW.

Proceeds from the concert benefit the Stanwood Area Historical Society.

Philanthropist award nominations sought

The due date for nominations for the Philanthropist of the Year award given by Stanwood-Camano Area Foundation is Dec. 27.

Through philanthropy, high school seniors receive scholarships, local nonprofit organizations get grants for projects, service clubs receive volunteer time and people with needs get help, foundation director Theresa Metzger said.
