Newborns can be abandoned legally
Virginia Pfalzer of Bothell, president of Safe Place for Newborns of Washington, reminds mothers they can legally abandon newborn babies in Washington.
In the news this week, a 16-year-old girl was arrested after a neighbor in Port Angeles told police she saw a dead baby in a garbage can. The girl’s father, 41, was arrested for investigation of concealing the birth by disposing of the body.
Safe Place for Newborns provides a mother, who might otherwise abandon her newborn, with the option of anonymously leaving her unharmed baby, up to 72 hours old, at the emergency room of any hospital or at a staffed fire station without fear of prosecution.
No authorities will be contacted and the mother’s identity will not be asked. The mother will be asked if she is willing to answer a few medical background questions for the baby’s records. The mother will also be asked if she would like to receive any medical care.
The Department of Social and Health Services will take custody of the baby and follow child abandonment procedures.
The toll-free crisis line is 877-440-2229.
