EVERETT — After leading for the first half of the game, Mariner had to come back and hold off a furious rally by Mountlake Terrace to win the Wesco South girls basketball game 44-41 at Mariner High School.
“The first half it seemed like we were in control,” Mauraders head coach Corey Gibb said.
Then Terrace went on a run that eliminated a nine-point deficit.
“It was a really close game in the second half,” Gibb said. “I give those Terrace kids a lot of credit. They never quit playing.”
Brittany Ruscha led the way for Mariner (4-11 in league, 5-12 overall) with 14 points and 14 rebounds and Brittney Todhunter added seven points and 13 rebounds.
Gibb also praised the work of Destinee Branham, who finished with six points and seven rebounds, and was always in a position to make a play.
“She got her hands on a lot of balls,” Gibb said.
Corrine Pingul led Terrace (2-13, 2-15) with ten points, despite a special game plan designed to limit her scoring.
“Pingul did a good job of controlling the game,” Gibb said.
With the win, Mariner separated themselves as the No. 4 seed in the South, which, if it holds on, would mean a play-in game for a district tournament berth.
“It was a big win,” Gibb said. “The girls did well tonight.
“It was a team effort.”
