UPDATE: 4A state basketball: Day 1
Published 9:02 pm Wednesday, March 4, 2009
Here’s a quick recap of scores involving our local teams that played already today.
GIRLS
Snohomish 53, Bellarmine Prep 34
Kentwood 73, Kamiak 39
Issaquah 58, Jackson 55
BOYS
Kentridge 65, Mariner 50
Foss 42, Mountlake Terrace 39
Clearly, it’s been a rough day for Wesco/District 1 squads. Snohomish is the lone winner so far. The only local team left to play tonight is Lake Stevens, which is warming up for its first-round clash against Garfield.

Final score: Foss 42, Mountlake Terrace 39
The Mountlake Terrace Hawks had plenty of chances, but in the end they couldn’t keep up with the speedy Foss Falcons.
Foss of Tacoma held on for a 42-39 victory over Mountlake Terrace tonight during the Class 4A state boys basketball championships at the Tacoma Dome. Terrace (17-7) got within one point when Karsten Strieby made a jump shot with 3.6 seconds to go. But Nate Walker made two free throws for Foss (21-5) and Terrace was unable to get off a 3-point shot before the buzzer.
“We had a chance,” Mountlake Terrace coach Nalin Sood said, “(but) I don’t think we’re going to walk out of here complacent with that because I didn’t see anything in the program about moral victories.”
Strieby, a senior post, led Terrace with 17 points, 12 rebounds and three assists. He was 6 of 13 from the field and 5 for 7 on free throws.
The Hawks will play Eisenhower (25-2) at noon today in a loser-out consolation game.

End of third quarter: Mountlake Terrace 31, Foss 31
Fueled by senior post Karsten Strieby, Terrace played well in the third quarter and several times led by two points. Strieby, who scored just two points in the first half, erupted for 11 points in the third period.
Terrace looks tired — Foss is incredibly quick — but more confident than it did earlier in the game. Strieby is doing a good job of drawing contact down low and finding ways to keep the Hawks in it.
Here’s a girls update: I checked to see how Kamiak was doing and it wasn’t pretty. Kentwood was beating the Knights 71-39 late in the fourth quarter.

Boys halftime score: Foss 20, Mountlake Terrace 18
For awhile it looked like this one was going to get away from Mountlake Terrace.
The Hawks were down 20-11 with a few minutes to go in the first half and struggling to get any decent looks at the basket on offense. But Terrace closed the second quarter with a 7-0 scoring run.
Post Karsten Strieby ignited the burst with a driving layin (his only points of the half) and his fast-break assist set up Jaykob Sells for a three-point play that cut it to 20-18 with three seconds remaining before halftime.
Terrace post Tyler Stracener scored five points in the first quarter but he sat out the final 5:47 of the half after being whistled for his second foul.
Neither team shot well in the first two quarters. Terrace is 7 of 22 (31.8 percent) from the field; Foss is 7 of 26 (26.9 percent), including just 2 for 12 (16.7 percent) on 3-pointers.

Kamiak girls down 13-5 vs. Kentwood
I just took a quick look at the other end of the arena (a giant black curtain separates the two courts) and the Kamiak girls (16-7) are struggling early against Kentwood (24-1).
It’s a tough first-round matchup for Kamiak, the District 1 runnerup. Kentwood, led by University of Nebraska recruit Lindsey Moore, started the season 24-0 and is ranked nationally.

Mountlake Terrace boys coming up soon
The Mountlake Terrace vs. Foss boys game was scheduled to start at 5 p.m., but we’re running quite a bit behind here at the T-Dome.
Terrace students have been waiting (mostly) patiently to take their designated section of the bleachers. Now that the Curtis vs. Eisenhower game is over, the Terrace fans are eagerly cramming into the seats closest to the court. The Hawks have had a large, vocal group of supporters all season and it looks like most of them are here today, decked out in red.
Back to the Curtis/Eisenhower clash: It was an incredible finish. Curtis (20-7), the underdog, rallied from a double-digit deficit and pulled out a 68-65 victory against Eisenhower (25-2), which came into the tourney with an impressive record. It’s the most exciting, down-to-the-wire game I’ve seen today.
If Mountlake Terrace, the District 1 runnerup, beats Foss — the game should start in about 15 minutes, just before 6 p.m. — the Hawks (17-6) will play Curtis 7 p.m. Thursday in the quarterfinals. Foss (20-5) is supposed to be extremely quick and, according to a Seattle paper, is a contender to win it all.

Final score: Snohomish 53, Bellarmine Prep 34
Fourth-ranked Snohomish (22-2) had a huge first half and Bellarmine Prep (21-5) never got closer than 18 points after that.
Emily Guthrie (17 points, five 3-pointers) and Katie Benson (17 points, five rebounds) led the way for Snohomish, which won its 17th game in a row.
Snohomish will play the winner of today’s Garfield versus Newport 5 p.m. Thursday in the quarterfinals.

Halftime score: Snohomish 33, Bellarmine Prep 12
After trading a few baskets in the first couple minutes, Snohomish took control. Starting midway through the first quarter, Snohomish generated a stunning 25-2 scoring run and built a 30-6 lead with 3:49 in the first half.
Five different Snohomish players scored during the game-changing eruption. Guard Emily Guthrie was spectacular for the Panthers. She hit four 3-pointers and scored 14 points.
*****
Here on the girls court, Snohomish leads Bellarmine Prep 27-6 in the second quarter. The Panthers look good. They’re dominating on both ends of the floor and scoring from inside and out.
I just grabbed a scoresheet from the previous girls game, Moses Lake’s 51-38 victory over South Kitsap. Moses Lake’s two stars generated some eye-popping stats.
Post Carly Noyes tallied 20 points, nine blocks and six rebounds for Moses Lake. She was 10 of 13 from the field. Her teammate, guard Jordan Loera, scored 16 points, grabbed 10 boards and tallied six assists.
Moses Lake was the 4A runnerup last season.
*****
It’s all over. Mariner lost against Kentridge, 65-50. Mariner will play Roosevelt 9 a.m. tomorrow in a loser-out consolation game. Roosevelt lost against Inglemoor earlier this morning.
Now I’m off to the opposite side of the floor to watch the Snohomish girls vs. Bellarmine Prep.
*****
A poor third quarter hurt the Mariner Marauders, who trail Kentridge by 10 points (58-48) with 1:13 to go in a first-round boys game.
Mariner, the District 1 champ, has played well in the fourth quarter. But it won’t be enough for the Marauders, who are trying to avoid a third straight two-and-out showing in the T-Dome.

If you love prep hoops, the Tacoma Dome is the place to be today. It’s the start of the Class 4A boys and girls state championships.
First-round games began at 9 a.m. Now we’re at halftime of the Mariner vs. Kentridge boys game. Kentridge leads 31-25 at the intermission.
The bands from both schools blasted out some good tunes during halftime. Mariner played an energetic version of Paul Simon’s “You Can Call Me Al”. From the opposite side of the bleachers, the Kentridge band performed a bass-heavy rendition of Metallica’s “Enter Sandman.”
Herald Writer Scott M. Johnson is covering the Mariner/Kentridge boys game. My first game is coming up at noon: Snohomish vs. Bellarmine Prep in a first-round girls clash.
