Boeing likely to put 2nd 787 line in Texas or Carolinas – poll

The Boeing Co. is more likely to put a second 787 final assembly line in Texas or the Carolinas than it is to locate production here in Washington state, Herald readers say.

We asked Herald readers to take part in a poll after writing about second line speculation Sunday.

In an informal, unscientific poll, 20 percent of respondents say Boeing’s likely to start pushing out more 787s in South or North Carolina. Texas also grabbed 20 percent of the vote with Washington in third place with 18 percent.

There may be some method to readers’ madness, according to Chief Executive magazine.

The magazine ranked Washington 18th in its list of best states to do business. Sounds average … until you read that the state dropped 10 places from last year’s rankings. Only Ohio declined faster, at 11 slots, than Washington.

Guess which states ranked above Washington? That’s right: Texas and North Carolina. (South Carolina placed below Washington).

Alabama, which is where EADS and Northrop Grumman would build their Air Force tankers, ranked well below Washington and S. Carolina in the magazine rankings but has still picked up 16 percent of Herald readers’ vote for a second 787 line.

About 13 percent of readers say Boeing doesn’t need a second line; 12 percent think the company will look outside the United States; 1 percent say West Virginia is the place.

The poll is still open. Have your say.
