Super Kid: Cameron Bundy, Weston High School

Finding direction: Cameron Bundy struggled during school his freshman year, earning just one academic credit. A counselor in the Lakewood School District suggested he try Weston High School, an alternative school in Arlington. Two years later, he is close to being on schedule to graduate on time and expects to do just that.

Starting over: Weston has seven classes a day and provides a chance to catch up for students who have fallen behind. Cameron also likes the smaller school with fewer teachers, who he can get to know better. “There are less students, and teachers can help out students individually a lot more.”

Splitting time: Cameron attends the Sno-Isle Tech Skills Center south of Everett, where he takes a precision machining class in the morning before attending Weston for the second half of the day.

Heavy metal: Cameron enjoys working with metal, turning chunks of raw material into something useful. “I love building things and working with lathes and mills. This year I’m just learning the machines and all that stuff. Next year, I will help other students and work more advanced machines and maybe work on my own, designing programs (on the computer).”

Good decision: His advice to other high school students who fail classes and fall behind is simple: “I would say, ‘Stick to it until you graduate. You will feel a lot better if you graduate.’ “

Heroes: Cameron doesn’t list celebrities or well-known leaders as people he most admires. Rather, he sees a lot of inspiration in those who work hard every day. “It would be anyone who is doing well in their life. Anyone who has done a lot and worked hard and has accomplished a lot, I want to be like them.”

Close quarters: With two sisters and a brother and only one bathroom at home, Cameron has learned patience. “It could be crazy sometimes, but it worked out fine.”

Favorite bands: Nirvana and Sublime.

Making music Cameron enjoys playing guitar, particularly acoustic guitar. “I just like the sound, how it is so echoey. There are kids who want to be rock stars. The guitar is really more of a hobby for me.”

Recommended read: “The House of the Scorpion” by Nancy Farmer.

A different side: “I might seem like I’m an outgoing person to my teachers, but I can be shy around people I don’t know.”
