Constantine’s NHL chances take a blow

The NHL’s Minnesota Wild announced today that general manager Doug Risebrough will not be retained.

Risebrough is the man who built Minnesota into a defense-first team. He’s the man who hired former Tips coach Kevin Constantine — another defensive proponent — to coach Minnesota’s AHL affiliate in Houston. There was speculation that Constantine was brought in to be the eventual successor to Jacques Lemaire, who stepped down as coach a week ago. If that was indeed the case, then Risebrough not having his contract renewed damages Constantine’s chances.

Constantine had decent, but not great, seasons the past two years in Houston (45-29-2-4 in 07-08, 38-31-2-9 this season). We’ll see if its enough to convince the new guy to give Constantine another shot at the NHL.
