If you’re looking for a family friendly art show, you might want to carve out some time this weekend to visit the 24th Artistry in Wood Carving Show.
Children can take wood-carving classes and watch carvers in action.
“It’s a fun family day,” said the show’s chairwoman, Sandy Scism. “What they’ll see is a lot of beautifully carved art — funny things and fancy things.”
The show, presented by the Quilceda Carvers, occupies the pavilion building Saturday and Sunday at the Evergreen State Fairgrounds in Monroe.
The show, advertised as the largest of its type in Washington, attracted more than 400 carvers last year from Canada and throughout the Northwest.
Four classes Saturday and two on Sunday will be offered for kids who want a lesson on carving. Cost is $5, and kids receive a piece of wood and two hours of instruction by an experienced carver on basic cuts and techniques.
A protective glove and bench knife are provided, and kids under 15 must have parental supervision.
“It gives people kind of a taste,” Scism said.
This year’s featured carver is the husband- and-wife team of Gil and Bonnie Drake of Arlington. Longtime members of Quilceda Carvers, Gil Drake makes carving tools, and he and Bonnie travel the United States attending carving shows.
