PREP ROUNDUP: Baseball/Softball

MOUNT VERNON — Sherman Anderson Field held up just long enough Wednesday to see its home team bounced from the Class 3A District Tournament.

Everett pitcher Michael Murray survived the steady, chilling drizzle and his teammates supported him with a dozen hits in a 10-4 victory over Mount Vernon, ending the Bulldogs’ season.

The second game scheduled for Wednesday, between Sedro-Woolley and Ferndale, was postponed midway through the first game when the constant rain was leaving the field barely playable. Both teams had already arrived at the field and were sent home.

Murray surrendered nine hits, but only walked two and struck out five in a complete-game performance. He stranded a runner in scoring position in five of the seven innings.

The Bulldog pitchers could not match Murray’s command of the strike zone. Five Mount Vernon pitchers combined to walk 14 batters, including seven in the final two innings. Starting pitcher Ryan Knight walked five of the first 10 hitters he faced before settling down and working five innings.

Mount Vernon tied the score with three runs in the third, tying the game on Kelsey Leek’s two-out RBI single. Leek would also drive in the Bulldogs’ final run on a groundout.

Everett took control with four runs in the fifth, the key blow a two-out, two-run Murray double. The Seagulls added on three more against a trio of Bulldog pitchers in the seventh.

Mount Vernon’s nine hits were spread out among eight different players. Starting pitcher Ryan Knight was the only Bulldog with two hits.

Murray also had three hits and scored three runs. Jake Frauenholtz, Christian Smith and Chase Herrick each had a pair of hits and scored twice.

The Bulldogs finished the season 9-13.
