Bright Futures scholarship

Nathanael Barnhill, a Sultan High School student, is the recipient of the 2009 Bright Futures college scholarship awarded by The Kimberly-Clark Foundation.

Established in 1993, the Bright Futures Scholarship Program awards college scholarships to children of Kimberly-Clark employees in the United States and Canada. Each scholarship is worth up to $20,000 ($5,000 a year for up to four years) for full-time students studying at accredited colleges and universities.

The foundation received 311 applications this year. The 78 scholarships recipients were chosen based on academic achievement, leadership and involvement in extracurricular activities. The average GPA for this year’s scholarship class is 3.96.

Mayor gives a lesson

Everett Mayor Ray Stephanson visited Immaculate Conception/Our Lady of Perpetual Help School recently to share civics lessons with second-grade students.

Students have been studying local government throughout the year and had the opportunity to ask questions of the mayor. They asked what a typical day was like for a mayor, how the Everett city government works and why Stephanson wanted to be mayor.

May Rotary students

Miya McLaughlin and Riley Mitchell, both of Stanwood, were named the May Rotary Club Students of the Month. Both are fifth-graders at Cedarhome Elementary. Students are selected for academic progress, activities and overall academic plans at each of the Stanwood Camano School District’s schools.

Miya is involved in school activities, including choir and student council. Her focus and dedication has earned her an orange belt in karate and placement in the Young Authors program at Skagit Valley College. Miya loves art, and plans to pursue the field of speech pathology after graduating from high school.

Riley is active in camping, fishing and basketball, and serves as a crossing guard. Riley’s favorite subjects are social studies, history, geography and math.

Western Washington graduate

Christine Lucile Kuntz, a 2000 graduate of Snohomish High School, recently graduated cum laude from Western Washington University, College of the Environment with a bachelor of arts in education.

‘Shock the World’

“Excellence Electrified: Shock the World With the Leader in You” was the theme of 2009 Family, Career and Community, Leaders of America State Leadership Conference held in Wenatchee in April.

Lake Stevens High School students competed in events: Jenae Bertilson, Emma French, Derek Hahn, Crystal Kasalko, Evalynn Lopez, Caitlin Obee, Diana Rossi, Gracie Sheheen and Kayla Schmekel.

Caitlin Obee was elected as the 2009-10 State Director of Students Taking Action With Recognition.

Six of the students will represent Washington state and compete in events in July in Nashville at the 2009 National FCCLA Leadership Conference: Jenae Bertilson, Emma French, Derek Hahn, Evalynn Lopez, Caitlin Obee and Diana Rossi.

Everett student on Dean’s List

Madeline Madsen Downes of Everett made the Dean’s List at the University of Oregon in Eugene.

Downes is a sophomore in theater arts.

Gold award

Henry M. Jackson High School has been awarded a 2009 National Gold Council of Excellence Award by the National Association of Student Councils.

Henry M. Jackson High School is one of only 118 high schools nationwide and only two in the state to receive the Gold Council award.

WWU scholarships

Western Washington University student Ayana Uriu, daughter of Daisuke and Louise Uriu of Everett, received a $2,000 President’s Scholarship at Western Washington University for the 2009-10 academic year. Jonathan Slater, son of William and Anne Slater of Everett, received a $1,000 President’s Scholarship.

President’s Scholarships are awarded to approximately the top 8 percent to 10 percent of incoming freshmen and transfer students, and are based on superior academic achievement.

Uriu, an incoming freshman, earned a 3.96 GPA at Everett High School and is interested in majoring in theater arts. She participated in drama club and band. She was a member of National Honor Society and was named Department Scholar in Band and Social Studies. Uriu hopes to become a stage actress.

Slater, an incoming freshman, earned a 3.79 GPA at Lake Stevens High School and is interested in majoring in environmental science studies. He graduated from Everett Community College with honors, participated in Boy Scouts of America and worked as a ferry deckhand. Slater hopes to pursue a career in management.

Western Washington University student Raymundo Corona Jr., son of Raymundo Corona and Maria Vargas of Everett, received a $2,000 Multicultural Achievement Program Scholarship for the 2009-10 academic year.

The Multicultural Achievement Program Scholarship is awarded to students who demonstrate academic achievement, leadership, and a commitment to multicultural issues and activities in school or the community.

Corona, an incoming freshman, earned a 2.85 GPA at Mariner High School and is interested in majoring in political science. Corona hopes to become a civil-rights attorney.
