Darrington duo will walk 60 miles ‘because we can’

Published 11:24 pm Thursday, August 6, 2009

Even if you can’t make this Sunday walk in Darrington, you can still help fight cancer.

Laura Buchanan and Delane Lenker are raising money so they can do the 60-mile Breast Cancer 3-Day walk. Folks who want to donate to their cause may go to www.the3day.org, click “donate” and type in their names.

“Every little bit helps us reach the $2,300 each of us needs,” Buchanan says.

This will be their third time participating in the 3-Day.

“We started because Delane is an eight-year survivor. Delane and I are neighbors and have been walking partners for about six years and we finally decided to do something about breast cancer.”

“I work at Presidents Elementary School in Arlington,” Buchanan says. “We have two women who are also breast cancer survivors. And we walk for the many women in Darrington who have either lost their lives or are also breast cancer survivors. We walk because we can.”

Art Camp at Grace Academy in Marysville ended today after two weeks.

Students had a “cool” week after scorching weather at the start of camp.

Children, including Jessica Stafford, Cheyenne Crane and Erica Kruger donned their dads’ old T-shirts and carried on getting their hands messy in wads of clay.

April Peters taught kids including Cameron Schuler, Ethan Nelson, Allison Habersetzer, Annie Ivers, Jade Blue, Abigail VanDerbeken and Christopher Haynes about how to use a potter’s wheel.

Joan Dabrowski with Grace Academy says this was the first two-week summer art camp at the private school.

“Campers have been sketching and painting as well as working with clay, print-making and collage,” Dabrowski says. “The kids have been able to expand their knowledge of art and experiment with their artistic creativity.”

They’ve got the vendors, they just need the customers.

Hope Lervik, manager of the Saturday Open-Air Market at Getchell, says they are pumping up opportunities at the gathering Saturday with a Kids Carnival Fun Day.

Find a root beer garden, giant bubbles, music and food from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the corner of Highway 92 and Getchell Road southwest of Granite Falls. There is charge for some of the carnival activities.

“We’ll have around 20 vendors selling our usual farmers market fare including really beautiful doll clothes for American Girl dolls as well as other toys and neat things for kids,” Lervik says. “The market is going exceptionally well with the vendor selection, but we could really use some more customers to get things flying.”
